How to Safely Update Webcam Drivers
So you're dealing with webcam problems, and you can't communicate with family and friends the way you're used to. A driver error or outdated driver is probably causing the problems with your webcam. In fact, old or malfunctioning drivers might cause your webcam to completely fail. Perhaps you don't even have any proper webcam drivers on your machine.
How do Webcam Drivers Work?
Drivers work like bridges between your operating system and your hardware. They contain valuable code that allow your operating system to recognize and implement hardware. So, drivers are crucial instruments that you need for the proper functionality of your computer.
One of the most common driver errors is the "Unknown Device" error. This error pops up when your OS recognizes that something is plugged in, but can't correctly identify it. If you updated your operating system recently, it's possible that your computer won't recognize the driver, since it's outdated.

What to do when Webcam Drivers become Outdated
So, let's say you bought a webcam a few years ago, but you want to use it on Windows 7 or Windows Vista. It's very likely that you'll need to update drivers for the webcam to work properly.
Even if drivers are functioning properly, it's a good idea to check for driver updates periodically so that you can ensure proper system maintenance. The more you update drivers, the more you'll minimize the chance that hardware will malfunction.
Driver updates also improve the performance of your hardware. In the case of webcams, you'll have smoother, stronger video quality, and your webcam will probably have better resolution and easier processing. You'll get more frames per second and you'll be able to work more efficiently.
New webcams normally come with installation CDs or USBs that contain necessary drivers. Secondhand webcams almost always require driver updates, since it's unlikely that you have the original software necessary to install drivers.
Download and Install Webcam Drivers from the Hardware Manufacturer
You should visit the website of the company that manufactured your webcam. The majority of companies contain driver updates within their "Support" or "Downloads" sections online. Look for the software that corresponds to your webcam.
For all intensive purposes, we'll use the Logitech website as an example for how to download and install drivers properly.

Click on the Support link.
Logitech offers customers the choice to enter either the hardware's model number or the hardware's product type. The majority of manufacturers will give you similar options to locate your drivers.

Next, select your operating system from the menu on the webpage (Windows 7, Mac OS, Windows Vista, etc).

You may have to do some detective work if your manufacturer is no longer in business. Be careful. Only download from websites that are established and have current security certificates. You should do some research before you download from a third party website.
Webcam Driver Installation
It's quite easy to install a driver once you've located it. Simply double-click on the download link, and then click "Save." You should save it in a location that you'll remember, such as a new folder, or in the My Documents folder.

After you've downloaded the driver, just double-click on the driver's icon. An Installation or Setup Wizard will open automatically. All you have to do now is click "Next" and "I Agree" whenever prompted.

When installation is complete, restart your computer. If you've installed the correct driver, you should notice that your webcam is now functioning wonderfully. Congratulations, you've just fixed your webcam!
