Simple Steps to Updating RealTek AC97 Drivers

Have you tried to download RealTek AC97 drivers onto your computer, only to have your computer crash on you?  If you do, don't feel bad.  You're not the only one.  And it's not your fault. 

Usually this is pre-empted by a message that reads “Unsigned driver. Do you wish to continue?”  If you've seen this message, then the following guide is for you.  These directions should help you successfully install the RealTek AC97 audio driver.

(Keep in mind that to successfully install this driver, you will may need to turn off your anti-spyware and anti-virus protection.  Don't worry, you can turn it right back on again when you're done.) 

Downloading Chipset and Sound Drivers

In addition to the AC97 drivers, you will also need to download the INF chipset drivers.  You can go to the Intel website and use the Search bar for this.

Now You Must Remove Your Current Sound Driver

Go to the Windows Control Panel (available from the Start Menu).  Depending on your version of Windows, you will select either "Add or Remove Programs," or "Programs and Features".  Find the AC97 RealTek Audio driver and remove it.  Then go to your Program Files folder and look for the RealTek folder.  Delete it if it is still there.  You may want to double-check via the Device Manager to make sure it is gone for good. 

When you are done with this, restart your computer.

How to Install Your RealTek AC97 Drivers

When you start your computer back up, you may see the "Found New Hardware Wizard".  Click it off or exit it.

Now find the INF chipset driver you downloaded, and double-click on it.  Follow any steps it gives you, clicking "Next" and "I agree" as appropriate.  Restart your computer.  If you fail to restart, you will have to repeat this process all over again!

Now it's time for you to do the same with the RealTek drivers.  You will need to restart your computer a final time to activate your RealTek AC97 drivers.
