When you receive a driver error, you put the installation CD/DVD in and reinstall the driver but what do you do when it is the CD/DVD drive that is giving you the error? It can be a very frustrating experience and many people will be at a loss for what to do since their only line of defense for driver errors is the installation disk. In this article, we will discuss a few simple things you can do right now to get your computer running again.

How to Use the Device Manager to Update Drivers

All Windows-based computers have a device manager. This allows any user with administrator privileges to update drivers with relative ease and safety. In order to use the device manager installed on Windows, you must first log in as the administrator.

  1. Click Start
  2. Control Panel
  3. Hardware and Sound
  4. Device Manager

Once you are in the device manager, you will see a list of all the devices on your computer. Each one of these devices has their own driver and will need to be updated at some point in the future. At this point, you are looking for your CD/DVD player or any device with a yellow icon to the side. The yellow icon is an indicator the device is not functioning properly and is in need of updating.

  1. Click the arrow next to the device to expand the selection
  2. Right click the device
  3. Click Update Driver Software
  4. Click Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions

How to Update the Driver Using the Manufacturer Site

If you know who made your CD/DVD drive, then you can download the updated drivers from the manufacturer’s website. We will use Samsung as an example.

  1. Go to the Samsung Support Site
  2. Click on your product type (monitor, laptop, desktop, etc)
  3. Choose product type
  4. Choose product subtype
  5. Choose a model number
  6. Click Select
  7. Click Get Downloads
  8. Click Driver Tab
  9. Click the Zip file next to the Operating System file of the driver you need
  10. Agree to the conditions and save the file

Each manufacturer will vary slightly but they all have the same basic format. You will go to the website, find the support page, select your product, and then download the driver.

It is very important that you only download the new driver from the manufacturer’s website though. Typing in a driver name and randomly downloading it from the Internet can be very dangerous and can result in downloading a virus or other malware on your computer.

How to Install CD/DVD Drivers Automatically

To avoid all the hassle of searching for and installing drivers one by one, you can use driver update software. It takes all the guesswork and the time out of driver installation. Once you install the program, you don’t have to give it a second thought.

It scans your computer and the Internet so that you don’t have to update CD/DVD drivers yourself. You do not need to know any technical language. You do not need to know who makes your CD drive or your monitor. All you have to do is click a few buttons and go back to what you think is important.

As the world’s fifth largest media conglomerate, Sony has a massive database of drivers to choose from. Additionally, they have pages on top of pages of support documents you can wade through to find the help you need. While this can be nice, if you do not know what you are looking for or if you are not very computer savvy, then this can be a hassle and it can quickly become quite overwhelming.

A Quick Overview of Drivers

Everything on your computer needs a driver to work. This includes all the programs, all the devices and everything in between—without the drivers, your computer would not function. The drivers act as the communication device to keep everything running smoothly.

Anytime you update your computer (or more likely Windows automatically updates your computer for you) the drivers will need to update as well. Many times, this is also done automatically but sometimes a few drivers are left out and you run into driver errors. When this happens, you have to update the drivers yourself to get your computer back to running like it should.

Signs Your Drivers are Outdated

Drivers get messed up and need updating all the time but people do not recognize the symptoms. Here is a quick checklist that points to driver errors.

  • No Sound
  • Printer Not Working
  • Printer Prints Extra Sheets
  • Speakers Make Crackling Noise
  • Error Message: Device Not Recognize
  • USB Device Not Working

How to Update Sony Drivers Manually

  1.  Go to the Sony website
  2. Hover over Support
  3. Hover Over Electronics
  4. Click on Drivers/Software
  5. Select a Product Category
  6. Select a Series
  7. Select a Model
  8. Select the Drivers & Software Tab
  9. Select the Arrow next to the update you need
  10.  Click Download
  11. Click Download Now
  12. Click Save File

Once you save the file to your computer, navigate to where you saved the file. Then double click the exe file to begin the installation of the file. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the driver on your computer. You will need to repeat this process for each driver you need to install on your computer.

How to Update All Drivers Automatically

Instead of updating drivers one at a time, you can update all drivers at once. With driver update software, you update all your drivers with a few simple clicks. With three clicks, you scan, download and install everything in two minutes. No need to search through thousands of drivers. No need to search through dozens of websites.

All you have to do is turn on one program and click three buttons to update Sony drivers. It does everything else for you. When it is done, all the drivers on your computer will be up to date and your computer will be running like new.

When your video doesn’t work like it should, it may be time to update your video and monitor drivers. Since the release of Windows 7, most companies updated their drivers to go along with the new system. Even if you did not upgrade your computer to Windows 7, your monitor drivers could still be the problem.

How Monitor and Video Drivers Work
Your monitor has one set of drivers to communicate with the video card. Your video card has to have drivers to communicate with both the monitor and the computer. It might be easier to think of them as a translator.

Since both video cards and monitors are designed to work with a variety of computers and operating systems, they have to be able to translate different types of code. This is all done by the drivers. If a driver becomes damaged or corrupt, then it shows up on the monitor or with error messages.

How to Update Monitor and Video Drivers Manually
You can find all your hardware drivers in the Windows Device Manager. You can also have Windows attempt to update them for you. However, it is not guaranteed to give you the most up-to-date drivers. Instead, it will give you the latest ones Microsoft has.

If your video does not work, then you may wonder if a video driver update will solve your problems. Here is a quick troubleshooting guide to determine if the drivers are the problem.

What Do You See on Your Screen?
If your video looks ugly and very basic, it means Windows cannot read your video card and is using its very basic video drivers to provide you with some video. In this case, a video card update is absolutely necessary.

Do other monitors work?
Some people will have an extra monitor on another computer and this is a great way to test your video card. Therefore, try to find a monitor to use.

Plug in the new monitor and if you can see things clearly, it means your monitor went out and a video driver update will not help you at all. You will have to buy a new monitor.

How does video streaming work?
•    If you cannot watch a video online at all, then you need to update your drivers.
•    If your video skips while watching, then you need to update your drivers.
•    If your video starts and then stops and starts again, then the problem is most likely your Internet connection

How to update the video card quickly and easily
The easiest way to find video card updates is with driver update software. It will scan your computer and determine which video card you have. Then it will find the latest video drivers and list it for you.
